Halloween, Fear and Phobias: When Being Scared Stops Being Fun

Oct 29, 2026

Halloween is the one time of year when being scared is the whole point. For some people, the rush from a fright is thrilling because their fight-or-flight response kicks in and they know they’re safe. For others, the same reaction feels like real danger, and it isn’t fun at all. Neither response is wrong.

Fear is a reaction to something happening right now, like a sudden noise in the dark. Anxiety is worrying about what might happen, and it can linger long after the moment has passed.

When does fear become a Phobia?

A phobia is an intense, lasting fear of a specific thing, such as spiders, heights or the dark, that’s out of proportion to the actual danger. Signs include avoiding the trigger and feeling panicky, or even having a panic attack, when you face it.

The good news is that phobias respond well to treatment. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can help you overcome a phobia by facing it gradually, at a pace you control.

If a fear is limiting what you do, it’s worth speaking to a professional. At Cornerstone Therapy and Consultancy, we offer a warm, non-judgemental space to talk. Book a free consultation here.

When You Need More Than a Technique

If certain thoughts keep circling back no matter how many times you challenge them, that's usually a sign they're tied to something deeper: an old experience, a long-held belief about yourself, or a pattern that started long before the situation in front of you today. That kind of work is hard to do fully alone, and it's exactly what therapy is for.

If this sounds like where you are right now, we'd be glad to help you work through it.
